SuperNova Sighting

Ivan Nova was brilliant once again, going the distance in his first career complete game shutout, a 2-0 win over Baltimore. The victory moves the Yankees a .5 game ahead of the Orioles, putting them in 3rd place in the East for the first time since June 29th.

The Yankees took advantage of a Brett Gardner lead off single. Derek Jeter laid down a beautiful sac bunt to move the speedster over, and Garnder was than driven in by Robinson Cano to score the games first run.

Cano provided breathing room in the 8th, belting his 25th homer (marks the 5th straight year he’s reached the number) of the season, his 2nd RBI of the game. The run allowed Nova to come back out in the 9th, and save the pen for New York. Lyle Overbay and Brett Gardner joined Cano as Yankees that had multi-hit games.

Nova allowed just 3 hits, and put two runners on in an inning only once in the game. The complete game win improved his record to 8-4 on the year.

With the series win in hand, Andy Pettitte looks to continue his recent hot streak and get the bombers the sweep in Sundays finale. Pettitte is 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA in his last 3 starts.

Thanks to losses by Cleveland and Tampa, the Bombers are 3rd in the wild crd, just 3.5 games back of the Rays. And with the calendar flipping to September, that means the rosters expand. The Bombers are expected to recall infielder David Adams, pitcher Brett Marshall and catcher JR Murphy.
